These rod ends contain a spherical plain bearing with a steel/steel sliding contact surface combination. The bearing requires maintenance and can be relubricated via a grease fitting in the housing and via the shaft. The housing with the rectangular section welding shank enables heavy static loads.

Maintenance-free spherical plain bearings

Maintenance-free (lubrication free) spherical plain bearings are used for applications where long bearing life is required without maintenance (i.e. lubrication) or where operating conditions such as inadequate lubrication (or the absence of lubrication) make the use of Steel-on-Steel bearings inadvisable. Due to their construction, they have very low friction and can be operated without maintenance.

Thrust Angular contact spherical plain bearings

The sphered sliding contact surfaces of angular contact spherical plain bearings are inclined at an angle to the bearing axis. They are therefore particularly suitable for carrying combined (radial and axial) loads. A single angular contact spherical plain bearing can only accept axial loads acting in one direction. Under radial loads, a force acting in the axial direction is produced in the bearing which must always be opposed by an equal force acting in the opposite direction. Therefore, the bearings are usually adjusted against a second bearing.

Ball Bearings are a type of rolling-element bearing that uses balls to maintain the separation between the moving parts of the bearing. The purpose of deep groove precision ball bearings is to reduce rotational friction and support radial and axial loads. Radial Ball bearings can support moderate radial loads and moderate axial loads (parallel to the shaft). Ball bearings with shields or seals for protection can be lubricated to last for the operating life.

Roller bearings

Roller & Cylindrical Bearings are a type of rolling-element bearing that uses cylinders (rollers) to maintain the separation between the moving parts of the bearing (as opposed to using balls as the rolling element). The purpose of cylindrical bearings is to reduce rotational friction and support radial and axial loads. Compared to ball bearings, roller bearings can support heavy radial loads and limited axial loads (parallel to the shaft). They can operate at moderate to high speeds (although maximum speeds are typically below the highest speeds of ball bearings). The lubrication method must carefully be considered during the design phase when using roller bearings.
